ICH is fourteen. Or thereabouts. ICH is in love with Lucie – but has kissed Andrej. She has to look after her little sister, is getting her period, has a mother with no time, is expected to do the Abitur, and her greatest wish is a big hamster to help her connect with the rest of the world via TikTok.
Our protagonist may not have a name at first, but we can sense that it’s a foreign name, a name that’s difficult to pronounce – like the word “woman”, or the word “Abitur”, or the word “life”.
Hamster Wheel offers multilayered insights into ICH’s identity quest. It asks questions about the pigeon holes we are forced into and the niches we try to find for ourselves, like underground hamster burrows in an interconnected world.
