A story about prejudice, about the unfamiliar, and the right to a good life

„Xenophobia – highlighted here by author and director Günter Jankowiak using the example of the Roma minority – is always highly topical, but has particular relevance right now. The serious subject is presented in a play that is by no means lacking in humour and satire. The enthusiastic ensemble explores diligently how far things can go when the dynamics of aggression are not kept in check.” (from the nomination statement by the IKARUS jury)

KRIEG. Stell dir vor, er wäre hier
(War, what if)
by Janne Teller
In collaboration with Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts

„The idea that your own life could turn into a refugee existence is a bit like trying to imagine living on Mars,” says the Danish author Janne Teller in the epilogue of her book War, what if. The young director Anna Vera Kelle has adapted this intensely powerful thought experiment for the stage. Together with actors and visual artists, she set out to create a theatre experience that gives the audience a tangible sense of life as a refugee. In doing so, she addresses issues such as respect, empathy and the willingness of individuals, peoples and generations to take a step towards each other.

HASEN-BLUES.STOPP.
or: What’s OK anyway?
by Uta Bierbaum

The message is as simple as it is multi-layered: “No matter how different you are, you’re OK!” It is what the protagonists Fee, Rox, Lila and Zebrallala are fighting for during biology class. Fee is a little wild, quite experienced and has a soft spot for Rox, who simply refuses to let him-/herself be assigned to either gender and is constantly asked to explain what it means to be intersexual. Lila, the trainee teacher, is suddenly grown up before she even knows it. And then there is Zebrallala, the centauric school psychologist, who would prefer to be a female hare ... well, they all have their own unique personalities, which are there to be explored.

HASEN-BLUES.STOPP. uses comedy, imagination and an astonishing stage set to deconstruct established societal norms and gender roles. A play about identity and sexuality, about being different and being confident. A play that tackles everything – and does so in an unconventional, moving and humorous way.

KLASSE TOUR
by Michael Vogel and ensemble,
in collaboration with Theater Duisburg

School’s out, Join the fun! They’re off on a school trip, the masked characters from KLASSE KLASSE. In this turbulent collage of comedy, fantasy and group dynamics only one thing is certain: nothing is as it seems. Hidden behind 14 masks, personalities are shifting: daydreamers turn into dream dancers, wallflowers turn troublemakers and fashion queens become bad girls. Images and characters fragment and rearrange themselves, while the relentless performance of the beatbox artist takes the audience on a powerful acoustic journey.

DANCE THEATRE
Jugendtheater: TRAUMLABOR

TRAUMLABOR
*A RealityCheck*

In collaboration with the Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin

Idea: Irina Demina

Choreography: Irina Demina and ensemble

„The three male and two female dancers enter into a fast-paced web of scenes, presenting the audience with constantly changing moods. Visually setting the beat for this trip into the deepest depths of the imagination is the sophisticated interplay of video and lighting design. Now duplicating the dancers’ moving bodies through projections, now allowing the dramaturgy to be led by abstraction. Choreographer Irina Demina and her team were inspired by E.T.A Hoffman’s The Sandmann – which also explains the play’s many surreal undertones. The whimsical solo by a dancer sporting a giant spherical head is as much part of the dream imagery as are the mysteriously enlarged eyes. A true visual feast – not just for young dreamers.” zitty

THE BASEMENT
DON’T TOUCH ME

a co-production with DE DANSERS, Utrecht/NL
Choreography: Wies Merkx

„Four dancers and two musicians from the indie rock band La Corneille fearlessly work the stage, skilfully switching between genres: contact improvisation, acrobatics and capoeira create the drive, across all levels of the set, enabling the cast to balance the difficult relationship between closeness and distance in powerfully fluid fashion. A strong piece of dance theatre that takes the emotional world of adolescents seriously and throws you with such delightful bluntness off kilter that you immediately crave more.” zitty
